This has been driving my crazy, There is no tag/# on the block above the starter- but there's a blue stripe- the eng is black. I can't locate a serial # on the front of the block. and it looks like on the port aft side of the upper block there's a "GM 5.0 LTR S6T" (I think) also in blue. There are 8 bolts in the intake man, so I assume they're Vortec heads. I'm the third owner and in the paperwork was a brochure for Advance Automotive Industries in CAN a eng reman company with break in procedures...Is there any other way to ID the eng or do the blue stripes indicate a reman?

I guess it's good enough to know it's a 5.0 l GM 305 but where it came from and from what is a mystery

Where did you locate the 0M049123 number? That is a Mercruiser engine serial number so it should help you with finding engine parts especially the outer components and most likely the inner internal components if needed too.

Question for you...What does your ECM look like...Is it short like this one in the top link,
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31846/4856/70
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/5-0l-efi-gm-305-v-8-1999-2001-0l331631

Or long like this one in the top link,
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31844/2704/50
https://www.mercruiserparts.com/5-0l-efi-gm-305-v-8-1998-0l012052-thru

What ever design ECM you have ought to be your parts guide in the second link below for you.

Ayuh,...... You've probably got a reman. Long Block, dressed with the original motor's dressings,....

Hopefully, that serial number identifies the marine parts on the newer long block,.....

Bondo, I take it Ayuh as a yes from a Mainer, I thought is was name for another poster for years but actually looked it up.

I agree w/ u that it's a reman long block due to the lack of placards or exposed stamped serial numbers. It does have the GM 5.0 stamped on it... it has the short ECM.

My last question is does the Vortec heads change the standard MR43lts plugs the stock 305 uses?

Ayuh,...... All Vortec heads use the long reach MR43LTS plugs,..... Pre-Vortec heads use MR43T plugs,....

Here's a Classic,.....
Worth the 7 minutes, if yer interested,.....

This page is called Northern New England, 'n ain't bad info, except Ayuh, 'n Wicked are more often found in Downeast, or Northern Maine,.....

"The word "ayuh" -- though it may seem at first to have a positive connotation --
may in fact be used both positively and negatively. It has extremely subtle
undertones which, if you’re not native, you can never hope to master. Only a
native New Englander can discern exactly how the speaker intends it by the
subtleties of intonation. Something which confuses people from away some
wicked."

Oh,..... Southern Maine Citizens are Mainers,.....

Northern Maine folks, 'n especially Downeastahs are Maineiacs,.... ;)
