Just started working on this boat I inherited. It's an 85 Webbcraft dynasty with a merc 350 5.7L 260hp. The outdrive as you see needs to be replaced, what are my options for an even swap? Any guesses on what model outdrive this would be?

+1 and probably your cheapest option unless you want to gamble with a used drive.

Thanks, a little more info:
My cousin passed away last year and left us his boat. For the longest time I thought I was Wellcraft until I actually looked closer and notived it said Webb not Well lol. Anywho the boat was parked in his private dock in his backyard for several years. He used to take us out on it when we way younger (like back in the 90's) I haven't been on it since then. None of the family new the condition either before his passing. I ended up picking up a trailer and bringing it home and figure I would start messing around with it, interior is shot, no ignition key, and needs paint. On the upside the hull, glass, carpet, floorboards, and in good condition. The engine seems pretty clean, I need to get a battery and new plugs before I can try turning it over. I'm thinking of having a locksmith coming and rekeying the ignition instead of trying to replace it. I'm sure my cousin would be happy to see me bringing the boat back to life and of course it would be a nice toy to have.

I totally gutted the interior, plan on getting it all redone. I can’t figure how to get the throttle off, anyone got a clue?

Sorry to here about your cousin..........I would start by reading up on things.....go up to the adult only section and down - load a manual for your engine and drive. Id pull the drive first before starting. Pull the spark plugs and Squirt some oil/WD-40 in the cylinders, then turn over by hand to loosen things up. Drain the fuel tank...change out the fuel filters......new fuel/ new plugs then try and start it.......let it run till warm then change the oil.

I hate to say it but your proly looking at a new deck/ stringers and posibly a new transom.....Any soft spots need to be addressed now before putting a bunch of money into the motor & drive.

Good luck with your new boat!

You don't need to have the key re-keyed, just buy another. There only about $15

Pull plugs and put some oil in each cylinder. Crank it over a few times with plugs out and distributer disconnected.

Ok I was thinking of just replacing it too, but I was looking behind the dash and really couldn't tell how to pull out the old one, is there a nut or something that should be holding it in place?

By disconnecting the distributor, you are just referring to the electrical connection right? Is this necessary even if I don't have the battery hooked up?

Yes should have a ring nut behind the key switch. Take a picture of the wires then remove it....should be a standard key switch. Remove the center plug wire from the dist cap off the coil and the dist cap to turn the motor over.

On your throttle handle..remove the two screws by the trailer button and disconect the wires...again take a picture before you remove.....then there is a allen screw at the bottom of the round part ......loosen that and the handle should pull off.

If I was considering only replacing the lower unit on the outdrive, what potential issues can I run in to? As far as ratios, does the upper have a ratio that I must match, or can I find any decent lower and throw it on there? I would be looking for an Alpha 1 gen 1 correct?

Before you do anything to the interior, you should first determine the condition of the engine and outdrive. What makes you think you need to replace the outdrive? Has this boat been in the water for several years? Salt water? Where are you located? Has the boat seen freezing temperatures? My uncle and I just replaced a transom on a boat of the same vintage as yours. I would look real carefully at the floor, stringers and transom before I spent a dime on anything. Many boats of that vintage will be rotten.

BRG25:

We'll I'm honestly not sure if I needs to replace it other than by cruddy look of it, please take a look at the very first post if you haven't seen the pic. There is a small quarter sized hole in the lower unit, don't know how/when it happened. The boat was sitting in fresh water for a couple years, only freezing temps maybe 5 days out the year. I am in the central valley of CA so it doesn't snow or get too cold here. The floor and transom are solid, no soft spots anywhere. As far as stringers, I don't know how to get to those.
