Hello all, new to the forums and new to boating... I purchased a '86 Invader bowrider and am going through it making it sound for the water. It has a Mercruiser I4 140hp A654869. The outdrive according to the title is 682519 Mercruiser.

I have done days of research and many google searches kept bringing me here so I joined... Now... My outdrive has the eye loop top cap and the textured sides so I knew I had a pre-alpha MC-1 if I am tracking properly. Ok cool, now I know what parts to buy. I took down the outdrive and separated the upper and lower, it has the Hex key rear bolt holding the fin, another bolt under that going up and the two in the middle going up and the two jammed under the metal fins with one towards the front. Also pointing towards the Pre-Alpha series. Great... I'm learning so I thought.

Once I separated the two, I was kind of shocked when I didn't see the pre-load pin on the output shaft, and I have a squared off anti-vent plate... So I am thinking someone swapped the lower out with a R/alpha 1?

I am wanting to do the impeller and water pump and I know the bases are different between the two. So should I be using the Alpha 1 kit and base since I don't have a preload pin?

Is there anything else I need to look for since this appears to be a shuffled deck of cards? I'll be diving into the shift cable (the whole reason I started this project) because it's broke... HOPEFULLY it's been updated already or I'll be tracking down a 1/4-18 non taper NPT tap....

Anyway, take it easy on me... I'm trying to learn. I'm an automotive guy and can turn a wrench decently so diving into this mechanically wasn't an issue, actually extremely simple. Identifying what I'm dealing with and what parts and stuff to do it properly is where I'm questioning myself. I'm trying to get this thing buttoned up and get a few runs in before I'm off for training in the field for July and August...

I tore into the water pump, hoping to find a serial number imprinted on the pump base... no luck... it was full of broken rubber and the impeller blades are going in every which way... Looks like a drunk octopus....

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,....... An '86, should be an Alpha 1 transom assembly,......

So the cable swap, should be easy enough,....

It sounds like an MC-1 upper, 'n an Alpha 1 lower,..... no problem as they can be mixed, 'n matched,....

Thanks! I thought it should of been an Alpha 1 as well, but then figured the boat may of been produced in 85, but be an 86 model. I know invader was a smaller operation so they probably used what ever they had laying around lol. I have both pump kits coming, so I'll have both bases. My understanding is they look almost exactly alike so it'll be hard to tell.

The eyeloop on the topcap makes it easy to suspend from the garage ceiling though ;)

Compared the base that came out of the drive to the ones I have . It looks like they stuck the pre-alpha or MC1 base into it. The differences are minor, but the pre series has notches in the bottom and a larger rectangular hole.

Now I'm faced with the question of, am I wrong in the Identification of this as a R/Mr/alpha 1 lower or a mc-1? Or did the previous owners run the wrong pump base...

Mercruiser I4 140hp A654869.

The outdrive according to the title is 682519 Mercruiser.
Your stern drive is missing a number or letter in front of it making it harder to find an exact match as the exact serial number is important to know to help find the right info you seek.

Only by taking a guess that the engine serial number starts off with an A, I added an A to your drive number (0A682519) and the drive comes up as an 1986 MERCRUISER MC1, 1.98:1 Gear Ratio, Model Number 01989016..., https://www.mercruiserparts.com/r-mr-alpha-one-sterndrive-1983-1990-1

^Again it's only a guess of the serial number.

The engine comes up as an 1986 MERCRUISER 140, Model Number 01402006...,https://www.mercruiserparts.com/120-gm-153-i-l4-1983-1986-6229718-thru

Thanks, I'll do some digging to see if I can find the missing character. I definitely agree that the top half is a MC-1. But the lower half appears to be a an alpha 1 style without the preload pin and the squared off plate. So I was thinking I'd need a alpha 1 pump base. But what I took out is a MC-1 pump base. I want to make sure I put the Propper one back in

Lower section of the outdrive is stamped 162394113-c-s.

So it is indeed an alpha one lower. I'll put the appropriate parts back into it.
