new to boating, new to terms, new to anything having to do with either/or...

ESSENTIAL DATA REQUIRED
When posting a question about propellers, you cannot get a reasonable answer unless you provide the following information in your post: Items 1-4 are essential for meaningful response to most questions.
1) Performance issue you are trying to correct. seems to take too long to come out of the hole
2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum.Raker, stainless
3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required).14.5 x 24
4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful)5800 rpm (using boat tach), 59mph (using gps), 2 people on board
5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP96 Johnson Venom, 200 HP
6) Boat make model, year, length and weight96 Stratus, 290SF, 21', weight unknown

I am planning to use the boat to pull my children skiing/tubing primarily.
In addition to seeming to take to long to come out of the hole, sometimes it will cavitate/ventilate? just before it tries to plane out, and I release throttle and start all over. Not sure if I have the motor trimmed incorrectly when taking off, or if this is truly an issue, to be resolved...

Re: Trying to increase hole shot...

so my thought process was:
1. to change to a 21 pitch prop...
2. possibly going to a 4 blade prop...
3. adjusting the height of the motor...
4. adding the trim tabs and/or adding hydrofoil.
Any suggestions helping me get out of the hole and plane faster?

Re: Trying to increase hole shot...

the motor should be trimmed all the way down for hole shot

yes 4 blade and 21 pitch might be good but watch the wot rpm's

yes tabs, maybe foil but tabs are better

yes CHECK motor height.... with motor trimmed so that anti vent plate is parallel with hull is it even to 1" above the keel?

BTW love the screen name... "it isn't rocket surgery" is one of my little phrases to slip into a convo and see if anyone catches it

I think most people don't get it and just think I messed up tho LOL

Smoke, only us geeks get it....

Rocket.... welcome aboard.

Regarding the hole shot, make sure your tilt/trim is all the way down. then give 'er the throttle for the hole shot.

As the boat is coming out of the hole, you should be trimming up to the sweet spot (just below where she starts to porpoise)

If that takes care of it, happy boating. if not, drop down in pitch like you are thinking and watch your WOT. I routinely have 2 different props, one for cruising and one for water sports.

Gee, no need to go to 4 blades, IMHO. I do not think you want the added drag and don't need it to plane that boat.

A 3 blade 21" pitch Turning Point Hustler will give you lots of hole shot, and raise your WOT RPMs to 6150 or maybe more. You may or may not lose a MPH or two. No way to tell.

I would agree with your thoughts Rocket...4 blade w less pitch. If improved hole shot is your goal, 4 blade will certainly improve that.. watch your WOT RPM.. it may drop down a tick..

Thanks for the feedback. I picked up another 3 blade prop...21 pitch, and I'll Try this out. I have been warned to watch my WOT rpm, as it should increase.

RocketSurgeon,

A 21P is probably not going to be enough prop and may cause you to go past your 6000RPM max when you're at WOT. I would suggest trying a Mercury Tempest Plus in 22 or 23P. They have good hole shot and give fish and ski boats the bow lift they need to run fast. I would suggest running the large PVS plugs to vent the prop a little for the hole shot. I'm pretty sure it will cure your blowout at break over problem and if it doesn't you can try lowering your motor a little or going to the medium PVS plugs.

I don't recall the props having holes for PVS Plugs to be installed. I will have to check.
I'm aware the 21P may put me over the max rpm's intended.

RocketSurgeon, You would only have the PVS holes on certain Mercury props. However, a good prop guy can add the system to about any SS prop. So you could have them added to your Raker to help dial in the hole shot.

If the 21 doesn't have enough cup it's goona loose bite real quick on the topend. A 22 Raker with added tip cupping outta throw you out. The 200 Venom if it's healthy and sounds like it is cause she is doing good with the prop ya got. The 24 Raker unless it's been worked is a lot of times to much cause of variance in the blades and the usuall are running more like a 25. You could and would benefit from a prop doctor on that ride
