trying to swap

i am trying to swap an older 84 merc 40hp long shaft with a 73 50hp short shaft. the length diffrence from mounting position to the end is about 6". can i make the 50hp short shaft fit on my boat without cutting into the transome? would a jackplate work to lower the motor enough? any info on this would be a big help

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />Jack plates can help lower motors. There are also extension kits available to turn that into a longshaft. Go here ... http://www.baymfg.com/mercury.asp
