Yes replacing those parts is part of a normal tune up.-----But there may well be other things to look at.

the impeller job.. needs the power head removed it looks complicated but it is not 7 screws to remove and a shift rod nut

if you damage the base gasket under the power head just order a new one but careful because they look similar
just order it from IBOATS or vinatgeoutboard.com

Thanks for input and i'll address these issues.installed points, condensors, and plugs.looks like I'm losing lower unit oil into barrell.previous owner said he installed new impeller.Looks like something wasn't done correctly.installing carb kit now.decarbed motor, doing compression co.I've read several different things on oil gas mix.Evereywhere from 16 to 1 to 40 to 1.5.5 hp.1959 cd16 model

if… it is lower gearcase oil it is replaced with water but Don't assume oil in the barrel is normal so just inspect he the gear case oil I doubt you would loose that much so fast ..

probably half the oil in the fuel does not get burnt and gets shoved out the exhaust ports when the fresh load of fuels gets sucked in the crankcase in-ports

Yup, I cringe when I barrel test old motors. You can see all of the unspent oil that comes out of the exhaust ports.

I am overhauling a 1960 Johnson 5.5hp CD-17 right now. Same motor as yours. I did the electrical a few years ago. This spring it was a carb rebuild with all new filters, new head gasket, new base gasket under the powerhead, new impeller, and a bunch of miscellaneous fixes.

When you purchase the impeller, note that you need to know if you've got a plastic impeller housing or metal. They are different sized impellers so you need to pull it apart before ordering. Get the new gaskets and wear plate while you're at it.

Did comp.test and got 65 lbs on both cylinders.started right up after tune up and carb kit.but it runs fine until I throttle up then dies .acts like it's starving for fuel .if I prime carb it fires right back up.chi king it as it starts to die doesn't help.it has the pressurized fuel systeml I replaced fuel line and air line from tank to motor.it pressures up fine.I haven't replaced the line from filter to carb .I tried putting tank above motor to see if that would help , but it didn't..set points at 20 and getting good fire.any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answering questions helps just you.-----Do you have spark on both leads that jumps a gap of 1/4" or more.-------Did you change fuel filter ?------Is throttle opening at the line on the cam when lined up with follower ?----Perhaps open low speed mixture ( upper ) 1/4 turn and test run.-----An other possibility is the shock absorber binding in the lower unit.

It's as if it's starving for fuel.could an air leak cause this.I've changed all lines on motor. They were in poor shape.chocking doesn't help to start it
.I can't find any air leaks or fuel leaks.Chocking doesn't even give it enough fuel to start.Excellent spark on both plugs.prime carb it fires right up then just dies,no piping or backfire.I didn't run anything through small ports behind throttle baffle but blew air to clean out any particles in carb.I decarbed motor prior to installing carb kit.also new float.does anyone know the measurement from carb base to top of float when carbs apart.ita got good fuel pressure leaving filter bowl chamber.squirts out about a foot when line from bowl to carb hose is off.when hand control is at start the cam follower in just touching first mark on plate.I'll keep plugging away and thank all of you for your help.I love this forum and the helpful nature of you guys thanks
