While i wait for the temperatue outside to warm up,can someone give me a brief rundown as to what a person should do to tune up my 18hp Evinrude.I know for a fact that the motor has not been run in quite some time and I do not want to dump alot(ya its relative)of money into it if it is ready for the bone yard.

Re: Tune up

Not knowing any history of your outboard(what year, when it was last used)I would suggest you use the search and find info from other posters) Bottom line is I would replace the water pump(impeller)and change the lower unit oil and rebuild the carburator. And if it had gas in the tank, clean it out and put in new gas/oil mix. Just my 2cents. PDS.

Re: Tune up

Since your motor is from the '50s or '60s, that makes it around 40 years old or more. Be sure to check the condition of the wiring insulation, rubber fuel hoses, and fuel pump (if equipped). Old coils under the flywheel were known to crack and cause intermittent ignition problems. Points, condensors, and plugs are also probably due for cleaning, replacement, or adjustment. Be sure to use the correct service manual for any repairs or specs.
