Hi all.
i have a 85 v6 235hp outboard which i would like a little info on.

1st how much oil would my gear box take as i would like to do a oil change.

2nd i cant seem to find a choke and i cant start with out some spray, there is a button on the side of control box but not sure what it does.

3rd. I dont want to take the outboard to the local marine shop and pay them $400 for their service on the motor as i have put new plugs myself and doing the gearbox oil change myself too.
Is there anything i can do for the tuneup, i have most the mechanics tools and strobe light etc.
A tutorial or explanation would be handy.

thanks
Stuart

Re: Tuneup and gearbox oil

Your gearcase will take between 30 and 33 oz, depending on how much residual oil stays on the gears during the draining process. That engine has a fuel primer system which performs the role of the choke. There is a small cylindrical solenoid on the front of the engine which will inject a small amount of fuel into the top of all 3 carbs when you push in on the ignition key, when in the "on" or "start" position. Since the engine has an all electronic ignition system, it usually does not require any real maintenance, other than an occasional plug change. If you plan on doing your own maintenance going forward, you might want to work from an original factory service manual. You can get one from the original publisher at this website: outboardbooks.com

Re: Tuneup and gearbox oil

is it right that i drain the gearbox then put the oil in the bottom and fill till it comes out the top.

also how do i basically setup the idle?

Yes, you drain the oil out of the lower plug hole and fill from the bottom til it comes out the top plug hole; DO NOT unscrew the Phillips head screw since that is the pivot screw for the shift and has nothing to do with draining the oil. You'll have to have one of the gurus guide you on the idle issue since it is somewhat involved. Agree, you do need to invest in the service manual if you are going to do work on your own. Good luck
