I just bought a boat 1981 seaswirl 16' openbow with a 1981 75hp johnson o/b model J75TRLCIM.

I took it out on a test run and it worked but seemed a little slow and just wanted to have it checked out.

for this motor out of curiosity do you think you might have a ballpark on a tuneup, verifying the tach, adding a speedometer and fixing the gas float because the needle just plinks over and stays full all the time and i know its not(built in tank)?

ive only been a boat owner now for 3 days and dont know about this stuff, just dont want to be taken at the shop.

or if anyone out here is in the sacramento ca area, know a honest boat mechanic that wont take advantage of a new boater?

When you say, verify the tach, what does it read at this time? A mechanic would have come in handy before you bought the boat.

ok, your boats hull weighs 1600 lbs, dry, no gas, no motor, or gear. the 75 weighs 200 lbs, 25 gal gas 150. we're at 2000 lbs. before people and coolers etc. thats a lot to ask a 75hp engine to push. if you are hitting 30 mph i would say it's all you can expect. the engine is going to have to be propped right or it's going to lug and be over worked, and eventually die.

the tach was reading 5500 full throttle, dont know what speed, no spedometer. i know a mechanic would have been good before hand but the price was right $1000 and the engine ran and boat is pretty good condition.

thought it may just need a tuneup on the precationary side and maybe a better prop or something.

just was looking to see what you guys thought a reasonable price for a tuneup and the other mentioned so I dont get ripped off too bad. never owned a boat before, i dont know much about them or cost of repairs or tuneups. but the boat was running and for 1k, i figured wasnt too bad a purchace to get me out on the water for the first time.

if you are 1/2 way mechanical, you can fix all that your self. change the plugs, if the wires are bad change, them, change the oil in the lower unit. there should be an access panel to the fuel tank, with the gas tank 1/4 or below, you can remove the round plate with the wire in it, this is the sending unit for the guage, they are known to go bad.

A 75 on that boat won't put ya in the back seat when ya nail it, won't set your hair straight back running full bore, but those motors are forever, 5500 is perfect rpm, and at a thousand bucks, I'd call it a super deal! You don't need a mechanic. Just get a manual first read it, then ask away here with any questions....will keep ya floating...
PS. Just down your way,,,brother lives in Grass Valley on Lake Wildwood...
