It took me a long time to decide on my Turning Point Hustler and I have been pretty satisfied with the 19" prop on my 4.3LX powered 20' Bayliner equipped with smart tabs. I usually run under heavy load or during watersports, do the 19" fit the bill.

I did some damage to my prop the other day and it is time for a new one, now I am considering a 4-blade replacement. I am hearing and reading that a 4 blade may offer a little more performance.

My problem is that it is so hard to compare props between brands. I wish there was a standard dimensions available so I could tell how much rake and cupping each prop had. Performance Geometry and aggressive design are hard to compare!

I have narrowed it down to three props, the first of which is just replacing the one I already have:

Turning Point Hustler 3-Blade 19"
Solas Amita 4-Blade 19"
Michigan Wheel Vortex 4-Blade 18"

I want to stick with aluminum, so please don't respond with "Buy a Stiletto" ;)

Like I said I am happy with my Hustler, but I think a 4-blade may offer a little more. I am leaning towards the Vortex 18" because I this the addition of the fourth blade and the -1" pitch change will keep me right where I am happy now. The Vortex does say it has a cupped edge, but no mention to an aggressive rake or blade design like the Hustler.

Which prop has the most performance?

Vetack, we will try to help you as much as we can, but there is certain information that is needed in order to help you. The following form has all of the information that is needed to help you with your problems finding the right prop. If you do not know all of the information that is asked for on the form please give us the most information you have available as I have a program I designed to find the right prop for any planning hull boat that needs this information, and anyone else who is trying to help you will need the same information. It requires time to find all this information when we have to look for it and in my defense I expect you to be willing to expend as much effort in finding the right prop as I do. We hope to be able to help you get the exact prop you need for your particular uses, and this information is required to do that.
It is not as simple to pick the right prop as most people coming to this forum think it is, that is why we ask so many questions, it is for your benefit we ask all these questions. And if you have a stainless steel prop or are changing to one the blade geometry of the prop can make a lot of difference in speed and RPM.

Iboats Boat and Motor Info

1. Year, make and model of boat
2. Length, width and base weight of boat, look for boat decal on back of boat
3. Number of people and gallons of gas normally on boat
4. What do you use the boat for
5. Is it a Deep Vee and if so how many degrees of deadrise
6. Year, make and model of motor
7. HP and gear ratio of motor
8. Manufacturer?s recommended WOT range
9. Antiventilation Plate height above keel of boat if it is an outboard in inches
10. Make, model, diameter, pitch and whether SS or aluminum prop
11. WOT RPM and speed from each prop

The only thing I ask of you is to come back and give me a report of WOT RPM and speed for my database.

I have tried a Vortex 4 blade and easily over reved it, I went from a 21" 3 blade to a 20" 4 blade, I would expect similar results from your 19" going down to an 18", the Vortex is just a very basic inexpensive replacement, don't expect much performance from it. I have also tried the Amita 4 blade that has a lot more cupping than the Vortex and it worked pretty good but I wish it available in a 20", I think the Amita is only odd number pitch's 17, 19, 21, you might over rev a 17" Amita and lug a 19". Calculations will get you close, but you need to put one on your boat and try it out, Aluminum props are cheap to expiriment with. Or you buy a Stilletto.
