I got ahold of a one off vintage StarCraft Safari. Apparently, according to the designer, it was the only one built when StarCraft started in fiberglass. I am restoring it as we speak but would like to paint it in the original turquoise color. Does anyone know of a topside paint available in a true turquoise?

any good paint shop could match color you want , even home depot or lowes but the real question is what are you going to use for paint then go from there.
if using automotive style paints go to a automotive paint supply store and have them mix it .

Is automotive paint appropriate for boat use rather than paint specific for boats? I guess it makes sense for use on a fiberglass boat. Remember the Corvette?

you can use and folks have used oil based , acrylic latex and automotive enamels, and other automotive paints with great success , its the way you apply it that matters most prep and spray if at all possible to avoid brush or roller marks some have even had great success with Roll and tip method

If your boat is a Trailer Queen then Auto/Tractor paint works GREAT. I mixed my own custom Sky Blue paint using Tractor "Ford" blue and White. It turned out pretty good!!!

Check the paint your boat link in WOGs signature. He also added an enamel hardener.

A good friend of mine did his al starcraft in orange rustoleom.Turned out great and lasted for a long ,long time.Last time I did glass I went with interlux at 50 odd dollars a quart and the results were great.Woodenglass I like your paint job there.Heres my question ,why trailer queen for tractor enamel ?Shouldn't it be tuff enough for all uses?Last time I sprayed a boat I used Centari in dodge pewter metallic and that turned out fantastic I must say, lol.Painting is 99.99.99 percent prep. The best paint in the world and the best equipment is all for naught if the prep job is crap!

Slipping a painted hull for more then a couple of days/long weekend increases chance it'll let water get behind it and start to peel.

Trailered every trip greatly reduces that possiblility

82rude, you are 1000% correct. If you short-cut the prep work, you might as well use a pine cone to paint the boat. Because it will look like you did. There is no paint that will cover up scratches, gouges, rough finish and whatever. It doesn't work that way. The better you finish the primer coat, the better the final coat will look. By the time you get to actually applying the color top coat, all the real work is basically finished. JMHO

I'm not saying you CAN'T but...If you've ever seen a car pulled out of a Lake, that's been there for a length of time...You KNOW Car Paint IS not the optimum Marine Coating. I'm fairly certain that In fresh water the Tractor Paint would fair well for a week or so but...It's still not my recommendation. 2-3 days I KNOW it's OK!!!

Is there any reason I can't spray a clear coat on for the final coats to help protect against fading? The boat will be a "trailer queen" and will not be stored in the water.

clear makes touch ups complicated however it always protects against having to do touch ups in the first place , couple few good coats of clear and the scratches are in the clear most times not the paint, there is a reason car manufactures have stayed with clear coats even after the big peel problem in the 90,s but to each his own personally I wont be using clear coats on this project because well , I'm using acrylic on 99 % of it :)
