Can running two batteries ruin the rectifier? I accidentially ran my motor on both batteries one is a starting one a deep cycle. After that the motor does not charge but tach works. It only acts up when at high speed. Motor is a 78 150 johnson. I am going to check the rectifier but would like to know what caused it to go bad

It may have fried one side of the rectifier. I know some say you can do that but I've seen his happen before without using an isolator.

I will check the rectifier and post back. Then get a isolator

running two batteries is ok as long as you don't make it 24 volts instead of 12. i fried a brain box on a merc. doing that. should be poss. to poss. and neg. to neg. for 12.

Hi I run two batteries at once, no problems. But you really shouldn't switch from battery to battery while the motor is running . That split second lack of volatage does the rectifier in on some switches. run out on battery 1 and shut off the motor and switch to battery 2 and run back. this way you always have a spare battery.

It is set up pos to pos neg to neg. The switch is make before break contacts so that is not the problem. I ran it on both batteries and thats when the charging system stopped working. One is a starting and one a deep cycle so I thought that caused the problem

I'm not sure if running it on both caused your problem, but you really shouldn't have two different batteries in parallel. When you run 2 batteries in parrallel and they are different, the one that is stronger or bigger will be drained by the smaller or weaker one until they are equal, also they will charge differently while the engine is running and neither will get charged properly if it is hooked in parallel to a different type battery. Best bet is to run 2 of the same type and age.

I run two different batts one to start and one for all the deep cycle accesories. They tell you not to deep cycle a starting battery and not to quickly drain a deep cycle. So this is why I run the pair. They are not run together on purpose. One or the other. I bought a 25 amp isolator and will install it so both batts charge seperatly. And correctly.
