Hey guys
I?m trying to figure out if I have a bad shift control cable or something else going on here. I have an Evinrude simplex control system with the older type 400 cables. My problem is I can shift into neutral and forward but I can?t go back far enough for reverse. I suspect the inner wire may have been cut at some point.

Do any of you guys know how much wire should be protruding from the ends of the cable? Like the total length?
Thanks
James

Never had to measure one.
Is the cable adjusted properly?
What model engine are you working on?

I believe I have maxed out the cable lengths. The connectors just have a tiny bit of wire in the clamp set screw. There is no excess wire poking out of the casing guides. I'm working on a 1960 Evinrude lark 2 40 hp.

Have you checked the adjustment of the cable?
If you disconnect the the cable at the engine and shift the engine manually, does the cable line up with shifter when you shift the control box?

No. For example if i do as you say it looks like the engine side connector needs to move further back, but of course it cant because i don't have anymore to give. Ya Know?
