Shaking the Magic 8 Ball here ...

Am I correct in understanding that the upper gearcase on a '72 electric shift stringer (165 HP) does not need Type C gear oil?

I have been using Type C in both, but recently heard that the upper doesn't need it. I have to order that stuff from iBoats, and if I can make my "stash" last longer I'd love it.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Type C gear lube

you are correct - you can use 80W90 in the upper and intermediate
only need type C in the lower where the electrical components are bathed in oil

Great words of wisdom from Howard. :D Regular gear lube in the upper is fine.
