Type of Engine

How do I go about telling what type of engine I have. I know it's a volvo but other than that I can't tell. It's an older boat an 86 bayliner capri cuddy 20ft. The numbers and all the writing on there is really hard to read since it's an old boat. Thanks in advance

John, Start us out with some basic info ,like 4,6,or 8 cylinder Carb or EFI, location of distributor and anything on the outdrive. A lot of GM blocks were used by volvo.
