Any good automotive oil will be fine...

Make sure and check manufactures engine oil viscosity recommendations

besides factory oil recomendations
is there something wrong with what the oem thinks you should use?
folks have used all kinds of different oils in there boats. it's whatever the owner feels is the best and likes using.
a little link to what merc thinks.. http://www.mercurymarine.com/servic...ntenance/faqs/mercruiser/?category=fuel#MCOil
myself, i just use 25W40. takes the guessing out of which oil to use. i'm under the assumption that mercruiser knows more than i know about oils and what is best for there product....

Normal automotive multi weight motor oil is not suitable for I/O useage. It simply does not have the viscosity necessary to stand up to the rigors of an I/O engine, for any length of time. That is why there is a whole line of FW-C motor oil designed for Sterndrives and 4 cycle outboards. Pick out one of those oils. I second the use of Mercruiser 25-40 oil, BTW.

I'll say the same thing I say on motorcycle forums, racing forums, and tractor forums I belong to everytime this topic comes up. There are tons of reports of LACK of oil destroying an engine, but I've yet to come across a report of a particular kind or brand of oil blowing up a motor - with in reason. What is with in reason, if you have a car, run car oil. If you have a boat, run boat oil. If you have a motorcycle, run motorcycle oil, etc. Brand or specialty blends won't make a hill of beans of difference.

There are many that will disagree with this, but again I go back to my first statement. If you keep it full and change it often, you'll be fine.

Mercruiser recommends 25-40. It's not a common weight to find. I use Quicksilver which is a Mercruiser brand. What compelling reason would anyone have to try a different weight or type of oil? If it's cost, then you need a new hobby because boating is not for the faint of wallet.

Straight 30 weight. Multi-viscosity oil is designed to fluctuate with temperature. At 30, it's heavy enough to protect the engine. On a 20-50 multi, I don't need the potential of thinning my oil out to 50. I trust multi in my car but not in my boat. But, as someone else said here, keep your oil and filter changed frequently and it matters little as to what oil you put in. Oil and a filter are cheap compared to the cost of your motor. My 2 cents.

You can run Any oil you'd care to run...
Just substitute the word Oil, for the word Grease in my signature...
