Just got my first fishing boat and upon inspection of the engine i noticed almost all the hose connections were secured with tywraps/zipties on the 89' 50 hp Evinrude.
I don't have a problem w/ tywraps persay but is there use on a boat engine really recommended?

engine manufacturers have been using them for years. they are cheaper than the stainless spring clamps or screw clamps

Yes, they're cheap and easy to use when all the hoses are new and supple. If your fuel lines are older and hardened, SS clamps are a better idea as the zip ties can't put enough clamp on the connection. For what it cost, I used FI rated clamps when I put my motor toghether as they do a perfect circular clamp without pressure points.

The only reason for using metal type clamps is if you encounter loose, sloppy hoses.

Too big of an accounting department at the Manufacturer. If they fired 3/4 of them, the motors would be better quality and cheaper

actually the motor price is set by what the market will bare for a price. so only the profits are affected. lest cost into a motor means more profit for the company.

Those are not a standard wire tie as they are a radius tie and pull a full 360 around hose.....

I'm usually working on my own stuff, and that probably makes some difference. But I now use regular plastic ties in various sizes for all hoses. I went the route of using/reusing clamps if the hoses were old, inflexible or loose, then decided to just replace questionable hoses, and press on with plastic ties.

I'm sure the specialized ties offer some advantage, but I haven't seen the need for them yet. Using a flat head screwdriver and a needle nosed pliers, I'm able to snug the ties down really well -- and add another one, if any doubt. I just really like the convenience of the ties over any version of the steel clamps. Fewer skinned knuckles too.

When you use the tie, leave a little tail on them so you can always snug them up at a later date if need be.

Can't remember that time I saw an OEM installation using a hose clamp.

Typically band or compression clamps that provide even pressure around the barb
