So...I pulled the drive to check aligment, and found water in the bellows and a bad water hose. Should have guessed it wouldn't be easy

I plan to replace the u-joints, bellows, gimbal bearing, water hose, and shift cable. Is there anything else I should replace or inspect while I am in this deep??

Its on a Mercruiser 1 drive s/n 3518617 : engine is the 165hp I6 s/n 3557042

I am looking at the following parts:
Sierra 18-2104 U-Joint (is this just one u-joint or the set?)
Sierra 18-8205 Seal Kit
Sierra 18-2158 Shift Cable (whats with the Sierra 18-2248 Shift Cable?)

I also need the oil seals for where the yoke joins the outdrive, but I haven't found those yet. Where do I find those?

Please let me know if I have the right parts; and any tips!

Thanks!!

ya can find all the parts ya need at yer local mercruiser store. i just did what yer doing and that's where i really got my parts, they know the numbers. only thing extra i did over what yer doing was the shift shaft, shift shaft lever, shift shaft seal, new style. also i ended up doing new drive gear brgs and yoke and seal.... ya'll have to wait and see what they look like when yer into it.
read thru yer oem service manual a bunch of times. it's yer bible while yer doing the deed.
yer gonna need some tools, the big spanner to remove the yoke retainer nut. a ft. lb torque wrench capable of 120 ft lbs. to put that nut back. a 1/4-18 nps tap for taping the shift cable (thats a straight tap, don't use a regluar npt tap), a special shift cable socket, some big snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring in ft. of the gimble brg. some large hose clamps to hold yer brg. stack together while tightening the drive gear nut. if ya reuse yer old brgs. and gears, ya don't need to shim it. if ya use new brgs or gears ya need to have a merc. drive gear shim tool too.
yer gettin ready to have fun. go for it man. ask questions here on the form, these kind folks here helped me thru mine......

Re: U-Joint and Bellows Job

Thanks for the tips, Ziggy. I plan to take a look at the driveshaft bearing this evening, then get the parts on the way so I can put 'er back together.

How do you know if the shift shaft and associated parts need replacing?
