u-joint bellows problem

Hello everyone, back again.
I have a 2009 Volvo penta SX-A outdrive and the bellows # is 3854127 but this # has been updated to 3841481.
Ok my problem is when I try to tighten the clamp it causes the bellows to pull away right where the screw is. It looks to me that the bellows is to big and its causing it to crimp up. You can watch the bellows start to rise on the inside as your tightening the screw. Sorry if that doesn't sound right. I can still get the original part # but the Volvo store gives the other #. Something so simple is being a pain.
Thanks for the help again

I'm not a Volvo guru but here is the link to the service manual.
Boatinfo - Volvo Penta SX-A and DPS-A SternDrive Service Manual

From the sounds of it you either have the wrong bellows or better yet something about the install is in error. At least with me posting something it will bring you back to the top of the list so others can have a look see.

Re: u-joint bellows problem

3854127 is the part number for the bellows but you can’t buy them separately, only as part of a “kit” 3841481 that includes the hose clamp and instructions.

Your problem sounds like the hose clamp is “catching” on the rubber bellows. Might want to try spraying some lubricant like WD-40 or dish soap mixed with water around the clamp so it will slide on the rubber instead of catching.

Thanks guys I will try that today and see what happens. The old bellows and new have same part number so it must be installer LOL.
I didn't see it nowhere but there is no sealer that goes on right?
Thanks LaDawn

Re: u-joint bellows problem

Read this thread here especially post 13 from Don S. If you tighten the clamp too much, bellows have a tendency to bunch up at the screw.

Correct, no sealer.

Re: u-joint bellows problem

Yep thats what is happening. I was affraid that the bellows would pull away if not tightened. The exhaust bellows fits nice and tight with no question on install. The u-joint bellows is so loose. Sounds like a money maker to me. I'm glad I noticed it or I would be right back where I started. It feels so loose when just snugged without starting to bunch up. I have learned so much from u-guys, I hope to be back on the water before summer ends down here.
Thank you--Thank you

Sounds like it's overtightened.
You don't have to reef on it.
It fits in the groove and shouldn't be too tight.
When you slid it over and the bump on the bellows fit into the boss.Did it go on with a snap or is it easy to pull off?

It seats in ok, just seems loose to me, but hey I'm a girl--what do I know LOL--I'm going to back off on it till it looks perfect on the inside all the way around and hope.
