U-Joint Bellows

I took off my Sterndrive and water came out of the drive area. The Ujoint bellows seem to have had water in them along with a thick grease. Could this have entered because of a rotten transom or is there likely a crack in the bellows? I have replaced the transom and evertything is back together except for the stern drive.

Should the Ujoint bellows be completely clean without any grease? Is there an easy way to remove and replace the Ujoint bellows? When reinstalling the stern drive do I need to grease the shaft etc?

thanks

Re: U-Joint Bellows

don't think a rotten trans would cause water to enter the bellows.. a little grease is ok, probably got slung off the u-joints or gimbal bearing.. if the water has been there for very long, I would question the condition of the gimbal bearing and u-joints.. you need to look at the manual, brother Don has it posted in many other threads.. and yes you will need to grease the u-joints and spline while the drive is off...

One other quick thing. When I look into the Ujoint bellows there is what looks like a spring inside it going around. It looks like it is there to prevent collapse of the bellows. Should there be anything in there?

Thanks
