U--Joint Noise

I noticed this weekend when I was flushing my boat that there was a new and distinct knocking noise coming from the lower unit. The noise was worst when the unit was in the fully up position and became much quieter when I lowered the drive (that what leads me to believe it is a u-joint).

My question is that I don't remember this noise before, so I assume that something is wrong. Is it normal to have some knocking at 1100 rpms when fully elevated from the lower unit or do I need to tear her down?

Yes..take the drive off and change the U-Joints and inspect the Gimble Brg. Also be aware of any water that might be found within the boot. There should be NONE.

TMD

You said it was worse in the fully up position, are you talking trim up or tilt up because you really shouldn't be running it in full tilt up as it puts way too much stress on the u-joints

Re: U--Joint Noise

to check the u joints put the drive in the full down position. with the engine running have an assistant turn the steering wheel from side to side. if u hear any noises such as knocking the u joints are shot. p.s., make sure u pull the prop before u do this!
