Hi, I'd like to replace the spiders on the U-Joint of my 2005 SX-M 1.60 outdrive. I've searched hi and low, including the stickies, and I am finding a lot of conflicting information out there. It seems like the recent bulletins are saying that you can't do it and have to replace the whole ~$600 assembly. But I am also finding this part number 3850812 listed for ~$100. Can anyone here tell me if, in fact, I can replace just the spiders? Is this the right part number for this drive? and if we get this far, is there a lower cost alternative? Thank you in advance.

The later assemblies were balanced, at the factory. The spiders are replaceable so long as you keep the orientation of all the parts the same.

Without over thinking the balance issue, simply replace the knuckle joints as described in the adults only section.

There is a small likelihood you may experience a slight vibration....very slight and it costs you 50 to peak.

They can be changed if they have the outer clip style. The Volvo part number for them is 3860232. This is the spider / U/J from the AQ series DP-C and on. It has the same dimensions. There is no other U/J out there that has the same dimension. This U/J runs $160 from Volvo. A guy on Ebay has them for $65 - $70 each.

The benefit of changing just the U/J instead of the assembly is that you do not have to reset the pre-load / rolling torque on the drive gear bearings

Thanks everyone. Glad to hear there is at least some technical performance rational for moving to a full assembly. I see the correct part number now in the schematics. Thanks for the P/N and the leads on where to find them.
But now billbayliner has be thinking about the pre-load. I got the drive off the other day and it feels like there is a lot of backlash in that first gear when I rotate the drive shaft back and forth by hand. I'm thinking now that I may want to look at that as well regardless. Any words of wisdom before I bust out the manual and crack open the case?

Will this u joint also fit the 2006 SX-A out drive?
