I've been running this for a few weeks now. Here's what I think.

For my desktop computers, I don't really notice any improvement over Dapper Drake.

I was really hoping for success on my laptop...

I have the infamous Broadcom Air Force One wireless adaptor. I keep waiting for it to just work "out of the box" with each new distro I try. So far it hasn't happened. I had no success with the bcm43xx kernel module like I did with FC5. I did get it to work (sometimes) with ndiswrapper. I used a spare 4GB drive in my lappy and made an honest effort to use it for work. I was not able to connect to all the access points I needed to.

It'll get there eventually, but not yet. At least for me.

Picasa & Google Earth are both crippled at best since Google didn't really really port the application to Linux. I hope the F-Spot team will import from Picasa.

Guess I need to try out FC6 now. :)

Re: Ubuntu Edgy

Heh simply put. There's a new release of Ubuntu called "Edgy". The last one was called "Dapper Drake". I tried it out. My laptop has a wireless card that's notoriusly difficult to get working in Linux because of licensing issues with the hardware vendor.

FC5 and FC6 refer to releases from the Fedora Project (another Linux flavor). Those names are short for Fedora Core 5 and 6 respectively.

Google Earth and Picasa are software made by Google. Instead of making software for Linux they used some special software to make the Windows version run on Linux. Because of that implementation, many features are broken and performance suffers.

F-Spot is a piece of software in early stages of development that's similar to Picasa.

It'd be really cool to run Linux instead of Windows, but for me at least, it ain't there yet. :)

But on the positive side, here's the good part:

Linux used to require a good bit of technical skill to install. That's no longer the case.

If you managed to get it installed, getting the graphical user interface to work was a nightmare. Not anymore.

There used to be no good software to open MS Office documents. Now there's several and they're good.

You used to be stuck with a crappy web browser. Not anymore. Thanks Firefox, Konqueror, Opera, etc...

You used to have to edit config files to configure anything. Not anymore. Thanks Gnome, KDE, etc...

The list goes on and on. It's getting there.

It's already there for folks smarter than me. Even though I'm into this kinda stuff, I do like to USE my computer more than work on it. :p

It's good to know you have alternatives and to try them out sometimes. I would not know the things I know now had it not been for the countless hours I've spent fiddling with Linux over the years. If you want to understand how the Internet works, build yourself a Linux box and setup WWW, DNS, FTP, SMTP, POP3 servers. It'll click I assure you.

Still looking for that one. I'll get back to you. :p

I need to get some more sanding discs from Home Depot. I just came in from sanding off some of that awful repair that was done on the bow. I also sanded down a few of the other bad spots I had marked. Looks like I'm gonna make quite a few new holes in the hull before it's over. I just wanna exposes all the weak spots so I can fix it right. I'm trying not to worry about the holes I've added and just keep the faith that epoxy and cloth will conquer all.
