I liked UBUNTU at first but I downloaded all of the recommended updates as they came into the update folder, turns out that I probably didn't need most of them. Now, without learning the code I can't reload Ubuntu or Windblows. Slow and choppy. PC in another room is quick with windows xp.

Any ideas for optimizing or reloading either OS over the existing Ubuntu?

Sounds like you need to start over by running fdisk and reformat the hard drive to load xp back on. If the xp disk won't do this, make sure your boot order in your bios is set to run the cd first.

+1 You should be able to install Ubuntu without removing XP. When you start your computer it should give you the option of running either O.S. You don't even have to install Ubuntu on a partitioned hard drive....it will run off a flash drive. I run mine on a 2nd hard drive so I can backup each OS onto the other hard drive.

Use a real OS. Try Fedora.

I've tried all of the things that we would all do 1st. Booting from disk doesn't work with either recovery or full window xp cd. The command prompt in ubuntu is grub> and the old dos commands I previously used are worthless.

Google search brings up many things that haven't worked. When I installed ubuntu, I didn't partition the drive and gave it all to ubuntu.

What type and model of computer are you working on? You will need to find out how to enter the bios of your computer and change the boot order to cd/dvd rom first. Then insert the xp disk and restart the computer.

I tried to destroy it in some of the settings and it works better suddenly, I would still like to know what is running at startup and why it doesn't do what it should. Instead of an hour-glass the screen gets a sky blue hue when it is overloaded. I can type paragraphs, go take a pee and the come back to see what I typed.

I am familiar with the bios or cmos settings and have tried multible boots from discs. It seems to be more of a "remove ubuntu" first requirement. I've been my personal and family/friends computer build/fix guy for years. This OS has me a bit baffled.

Ubuntu has been a kludgy mess since about the 10th versions. It used to be good because it had/has commercial support from Canocial.

I use OpenSuse 13 with KDE4 and it makes a good quick secondary OS

Why do you guys need alternative operating systems? Not that I'm a fan of anything Microsoft, but I'm curious about the benefits of two or more OS's.

1. Free
2. Each OS can be used as storage to backup the other
3. One OS can be reserved for personal and secure use
4. Linux updates are less obtrusive and rarely require a re-boot
5. Ubuntu comes with REAL software,not trial or home versions. The Libre office suite is excellent and compatible with MS office professional including excel,powerpoint,word,paint,calc etc.
6. Hundreds of free software available
7. Ubuntu's graphics and desktop is streamlined and easy to navigate.

I use Linux 99% of the time. There are a few programs that still require MS to run. Linux with Wine will run most MS programs.

I'm sticking with ubuntu for now. I deleted about 30 programs that I don't need in the last couple of days and it seems to have helped. I've just never taken the time to learn the tricks in ubuntu.

Also once you learn how to use the command line you can do things like write a script that will go through my 89,000 MP3 files and remove duplicates.

Many free video and audio programs are native to Linux and ported to windows.. Amarok or Clementine are great media players/ organizers and only stable on Native linux. Handbrake is a great MP4 video converter, and even GIMP is a great alternative to Photoshop and again, is native to Linux... Open Office and Libre Office as popular as they are for windows are also linux native

One of the few things MS does right is Office. Still blows away the Linux versions.

Good comparison.

My company gives me my MS Office for free so cost is not an issue.

It better blow them away. MS Office is $100 for the cheapest version and Libre/Open Office is free
