Hello Everyone,

It seems to be one thing after the other lately first the Air compressor now the washing machine.

I bought a new compressor hoping I can fix the washing machine.

I have a Ge Top load washer I bought in 2004,

It will Fill rinse and spin but it will not agitate.

Here is what I have done thus far.

I have checked the agitator coupler it is in perfect shape and not stripped.

I have removed the bottom and front panel and checked the belt again in perfect shape.

I have swapped the motor on it with a used one from an appliance repair shop.

The only thing that happens is in agitate mode the motor just hums. Neither of the shafts spin.

The transmission pulley and shaft move with no resistance clockwise but has alot of resistance counter clockwise seems to bind up in one spot but I am able to move it through by hand.

So now I am just at a loss and want to fix the problem rather than throw parts at it.

There was no grease or gear oil anywhere in the case when I opened it.

The motor is getting 110 volts in agitate mode but I don't have a wiring diagram to verify things.

Jeff from appliance parts dot com hangs out in the home repair newsgroup. He may have a faq or ask a question section on his site.

It spins so can't be the issue.

I am more familiar with Whirlpool and Maytags since I used to own laundromats. I would pull the belt from the motor and see if it will spin when in agitate mode. If it does, it still doesn't mean the motor is good but then you can check the pulleys it drives to see if they are able to turn freely.

edit: I see you turned the pulleys. With the belt off the motor in agitate mode make sure you note which direction it spins so you can spin the pulleys in the proper direction.

It would help if you gave model # and age. The transmission that GE/Hotpoint used for years is very simple...it has a sector gear so it will agitate when motor reverses. Sometimes the sector link will break. The newer washers have a different design. I do not know about now but these transmissions were hard to get parts for and were usually changed out as a complete unit. I have had to fabricate parts to repair them. I am an old man,so it has been years (10) since I last worked on a GE/Hotpoint.

I am 99% certain it is the tranny now. model number is Whdsr209daww.

I just removed the belt and the motor pully spins without the belt on it. I reinstalled the belt and nothing but the motor humming and trying I pushed on the motor pully and it started agitating (empty) I think the tranny is hanging up in one spot and I pushed the motor through it.

It still kept agitating after I pushed it through.

So I guess the question is should I go ahead and replace the transmission or see if my uncle (who is a tool and dye maker) can make a new gear.

When I used to own my laundramats, I used to get broken gears in the Speed Queen trannys. I was able to take them apart and replace the gear. They actually sold the gears seperately.

The tranny makers as likely as not buy standard gears when they can.
If you find a broken gear, a decent bearing supply house should be able to get you a gear that fits.

That has the newer type tranny. $178 from repair clinic....could not find a parts break down. First verify that your motor is electrically running in both directions.

Which is probably more than what a 9 year old washer is worth unfortunately.

The motor is running in both directions. It will agitate without the belt on. Which is why I am diagnosing as a transmission.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRFGFFFFFFFFFFFFFFGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

New transmission is installed, still no agitate.

The update is now, with the new transmission in, I can grab hold of the agitator with my hand yank it and it will start agitating on it own.

BUT it will not agitate unless I start it, the motor just hums.

Re: UGh Washing machine troubles

Is it the old style round and back or the newer up and down? Either way I betting on something stuck or tangled up. It has to be in the mechanical side of the equation because I am fairly sure it takes more raw motor power to spin than to agitate.

If you got it from Repair Clinic they'll take it back.

If it is a faulty motor, that is a heck of a price!!

sounds like it could be the motor then. Is this a 2 speed washer with normal and gentle cycles? If so, try it on both speeds.

It will not agitate in either cycle. It spins just fine, I picked up and installed a used motor from an appliance repair shop in town and it did the same thing.

Re: UGh Washing machine troubles

So now I have installed a new transmission, and a different motor, and no change.

I am running out of options, the only other thing I can think is maybe a tub bearing seizing in one direction but thats about the dumbest thing I think Ive ever heard.

Especially as hard as it spins in the spin cycle.
