ummm is it sposed to do that? tilt cylinder

hey guys got the boat out(165 hp alpha one 1973 stern drive) and go to trim it up and nothing. figured out it was the shift lock type thing. well it started to go up and then :eek:blew **** everywhere!! put a nice crack in the cylinder. what would cause this? too much pressure? i dont know. would just one tilt cylinder tilt the drive?
