Unable to remove lower unit

I have a 1984 50hp Mercury outboard. I want to replace the impeller. After removing what appears to be all the fasteners, the lower unit only separates about 1/4 in. I apparently am missing something and the manual I have doesn't help. Any suggestions?

There is a shift mechanism that must be disconnected before it will seperate any further.Get a good manual that will show exactly how to disconnect it. CC

I think that motor has a splined shift shaft and it should just come apart at the splines. Nothing needs to be disconnected.

There's a nut under the trim tab that needs to be removed. The trim tab is held in by an Allen-head bolt, accessible through the hole in the top of the rear exhaust housing snout.<br />- Scott

Not sure if you have this but I have a 150 that has a zinc trim tab just above the prop, that has to come off because there is another bolt hidden by the trim tab.
