Anyone have insight into the wiring of a Uniden solara dsc radio with Lowrance hds 7 gen 2 touchscreen to sync up the GPS coordinates wiht the radio?

Does the Lowrance have NMEA 0183 connections? That's the only protocol the Solara has. I have the same radio hooked to my Humminbird 385ci and it works great. No fiddling with protocol settings was required; they both defaulted to the same ones.

There is no synchronization going on. There is only one source of position information: from the GPS receiver. There really is no way to make two GPS receivers become synchronized about the position they deduce. Each GPS receiver deduces its own position, without trying to become synchronized to another receiver.

The GPS receiver will send position data to the DSC radio. The radio will utilize that data in any transmission it makes which includes its present position. The data link is most like to be done via NMEA-0183.

The only aspect of the Uniden radio that might make this a problem is an inconsistent use of wire insulation color in the Uniden radios with regard to what conductor is carrying what signal. See

Once you have obtained reliable information about the color coding of the conductors, the wiring is very simple. See my guideline on interconnection of NMEA-01083 devices at

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ref...eNMEA0183.html

It offers a very simple and very consistent method of making the interface.

The biggest problem in accomplishing the interfacing of devices is to translate all the odd names used by the manufacturers for the signal names and to get reliable information from the manufacturer on the color codes.

Lowrance is quite reliable and consistent in the wire color codes they use, but you have to pay attention to the configuration of the port. On some HDS models the facilities can be configured as one NMEA-0183 port with the recommended differential signal (RS-422) wiring, or as two NMEA-0183 ports with the older, no longer recommended, single-ended signal wiring (which Lowrance calls RS-232). I don't think the HDS-7 provides that option, but it is prudent to double check in their literature.

IMPORTANT--It is also important to connect the TALKER from the radio to the LISTENER on the chart plotter. A DSC radio will produce data on its NMEA-0183 output that should be sent to the chart plotter. The chart plotter will typically display the position of vessels that have sent their position information to your vessel. You will want this connection to be in addition to the one you have asked about.
