I have a mercury outboard 50 horse. Had it checked out once my local boat mechanic said hes pretty sure it has a 75 horse power head somebody had swapped at some point. Not sure if this is possible? I know it pushes my 16 foot polar Kraft about 35 it screams for a John boat being steering console front and rear decks. Haven't been passed by another Jon boat in 14 years with it.
My main question is, are all older Mercury's this amazingly reliable? Ive had this boat end engine for 14 years I've never winterized it once. Never rebuild carbs. I out a new impeller for water pump in it one time. Found out it was bad after engine overheated and died, wouldn't turn over. It cooled down. Paddled into shore, got a new impeller in it and away I went! I've changed plugs twice in 14 years.
My transom has rotted out I've replaced it, bilge pump and aerator lines have rotted and ive replaced them, had to replace carpet twice. BUT, the engine to this day still rubs like a top!
Every single spring I go out to the boat, same gas as last year, nothing winterized, it fires right up, might stumble for a few seconds just at first but runs like a champ all summer. Do it all over again.
It starts up faster than I can flick the key over. I shot this video tonight I'm replacing the interior yet again. Is it common for the engine to outlive the boat this much? I'm in no way nice to it, I hit logs, run it onto sand bars, WOT all day, so on.
I use the cheapest gas available every time nor ally 87 octane 10% ethanol. I always mix 50:1 with either quicksilver or Pennzoil.
