i'm new to boating. found an old alum. boat with 70hp evinrude motor and trailer for $300. it must have 2000 rivets. the farmer said it has been sitting for six years. the hull is sound. no ser. numbers or make, no paperwork. its 20' has a small cabin that you bend over to get inside. going under the dash there is a small hatch between the windshild and bow. the top and sides are alum. has a rap-around windshild, side glass slides back. the back of the cabin is open, there are two bench seats on each side. and a drivers seat. whats odd is the nose or bow' from the nose, the front goes stright down to below the water line. the sides are one piece. the bottom is semi-vee smoothing out to flat in the rear.
the boat is built like a tank. has 1" plywood floor boards and 3/4" sides. i have tried everything to find the make. any ideas.

Re: unknown boat?

It does sound like a really neat set up and one heck of a good deal, however I have one concern that you may have overlooked...
no ser. numbers or make, no paperwork.
If I were you I would contact (in person with the seller present would be best) whatever department of your state that deals with registration and titles of vessels and ask about the situation concerning no I.d ###'s before you lay any cash down... Don't want to see ya get stuck with something you can't use and enjoy... ;)

P.S. If ya can, We'd love to see some pics of that boat... Your discription sounds very interesting...

Re: unknown boat?

thanks, i'll do my best on photos, but i put out the bucks for the boat. in kentucky you can go with a junk title if its over 5 years old. he told me that the famley owned the boat for about 30 years that he knows of. it was past down. he thinks it was from the early forties. i will find a way to get the pictures to you. thanks again. ed

er,

From your description, it sounds like it could be an old "Lone Star" or "Grumman".

The description of the bow has me a bit confused. Otherwise, possibly a Starcraft: Cheiftain or Islander.

I think with a pic. or two, I could ID it.

That type of design is called an express cruiser. Had an 18.5' Starcraft years ago with a 75 hp Evinrude also a 17' Cobia of same design. The little cabins are kind of neat. On the down side the exhaust from the motor tends to get sucked up into the cockpit/cabin.

Re: unknown boat?

the bow of the boat looks just like the chris craft boats of the 1930s. sides smooth down to below the water line. where bow meets deck at the nose its a stright 90 deg. to below the water line. ed

All of my people worked on the river and your boat sounds like a work boat used by the Corps Of Engineers and other river busineses. The bench seats down the side were used to haul men to work sites up and down the river. I would love to see a picture, as I havn't seen one since I was a kid.
