Probably been asked a hundred times previously but I couldn't find the thread. I have a '58 Johnson 5.5hp that I'd like to get going. I had it running fine last year in a test tub but couldn't get it started this year (due to the fact that I've managed to unwind the recoil starter.) SOOO, where do I begin once I get the recoil problem fixed (the compression is still good and it has solid spark.) And just as importantly where do I find the parts for this little piece of nautical antiquity? I purchased the Seloc manual just recently on the advice of the postings here that noted the nuances of fixing the recoil starter. But I don't want to be tearing apart the whole motor if it isn't necessary. Thanks for any help.

Howdy, PG.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Check out the Engine FAQs. Plenty on reawakening an outboard and fixing a non-starter.
