Bought a new-to-me 1994 Evinrude 88 SPL last year and have been flustered with the erratic tach and voltmeter situation. After researching the topic on this forum, I guessed that the rectifier needed replacing but after getting an OEM manual and doing the tests, it checked out OK! I found the link to the Teleflex site and read about the special problems with the OMC "special" motors. After standing on my head under the dash while getting cramps in places I didn't know existed, I finally got the 1/2 watt 2000 Ohm resistor installed and IT WORKED! The tach is now steady at all rpm ranges and the voltmeter appears to indicate proper charging. Also have a Tiny Tach on order to check a suspected high rpm skip. Just wanted to say "THANKS" to all the GURU wrenches who keep us shadetree mechanics out of trouble and out on the water.
