Hi All,
I a couple of old chrysler 120 hp outboards on
ebay for cheap. They originally came from one of the many summer camps near here in the catskills(camp name is writen on side of one).
I did a little p.b. blasting and got one to spin
free from the flywheel to the prop. I hooked a car battery and jumped the starter and that works.

Now I'm determined to get the motor to turn over.
I need to know how to check to see if the alternator
is sending spark through the spark plugs and i've never had a car with a carborator so i'm a bit lost looking at the one on the outboard. how do i test them and check for proper fuel flow and spray. help me bring life to this old beast.

Run a compression test first. look for equal compression in each cylinder (within 5lbs of each other), and over 90PSI.
If you don't have passable compression , i would part them out on ebay.

If the comprsssion passes, spray a couple shots of premixed gas directly into ther carbs, and try to start. It should sputter, or run briefly.

If it does, the ignition is fine.
If it fails to cough even, we need to look into the ignition.
No doubt tho, that if these motors were seized-up, you can count on rebuilding the carbs and fuel pumps. It's only a bear the first time, so don't shy-away from the carbs.

Look in the FAQ section. The posting on reviving an old motor is very detailed.

Mike M.
