Unsure whether or not the transom should be replaced

Just picked up a '73 king fisher 16' Fiberglass boat that I am looking to completely redo. I am stripping the entire interior and rebuilding my own custom platforms and consoles. I expected that because of the year and the condition the boat was in.i would need to do construct a new transom (which I am not afraid to do) but I cannot determine if it actually needs it. I am. Trying to do the boat on a reasonable budget but if it needs to get done, it needs to be done.

This is what the transformed currently looks like

People say tap on it with a hammer, I did that and didn't really notice anything. It looks like someone has already been in there because the fiberglass was cut away. Not sure if someone in the past has done it and no one to ask if they did. not sure if i want to trust the craftsmanship of someone. I know nothing about. What are your opinions on the matter?

Your pics don't show any rotted wood. I would drill some core sample holes on the inside, down low, about 1" deep into the transom. Check the shavings. If they are light colored and dry then dill them with 3M 5200 sealant and move on to checking the stringers. Transom is good to go.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea, thanks. Not really sure what the structure is underneath if there even are any stringers, at least in the stern. Any information on the old king fisher master molder boats?

It seems as tho the floor is the hull of the boat to some extent

It kinda looks like someone raised the transom for a long shaft. that exposed piece could just be what was used to raise it.

The thought crossed my mind but the fiberglass cover goes right up to the top of the wood
