Ever use the alcohol/electric stove found in many cabin cruisers?

In my search for my first boat I find many boats with this implement in its galley. I?ve yet to find anyone who?s ever used it.

Anybody out there with a cabin galley use the stove? Use it regularly? And if not, why don?t you?

In my pre-purchase boat fantasy, I envision my cruiser as a home away from home, one on which I regularly cook and dine aboard. Apparently not many boat owners actually take advantage of these culinary capabilities.

most use their cruisers as weekend get away, and don't cook. a grill on the rail is much cleaner, and does not heat up the cabin.

Yes, we use everything regularly! The most convenient setup is microwave (at dock only, unless you have a genny) plus two-burner alcohol\electric. Our boat is 30' Sea Ray Sundancer but did same on last boat 25' Larson express.

Typically, I'll grill the meat on a kettle grill (rail attached) and wife either heats up side dishes in microwave or does real stove-cooking using electric (while at dock) or alcohol (on the hook).

Don't discount the value of the alcohol stove -- it works great and seems very safe to me, but watch out for the invisble flame as it's really hard to see sometimes.

Best approach is to plan well in advance and take foods that are easy to deal with and\or pre-cooked. For example, don't fry bacon on boat but instead bring it cooked from home and heat it up. Make rice and heat it up or buy those packages you can microwave.

Good luck!

we go out for weekends and also take vacation a week at a time on our 24 footer, we use the stove on a regular basis, suplimented by a small marine bbq. the first thing I did was get rid of that stinky, heatless alchohol stove and put in a Dickinson marine propane countertop unit, now we are cooking.Oh and to all the panic stricken who are afraid of propane, it is only as dangerous as the person who misuses it

I use my galley quite often although I am not a fan of the alcohol I have used them in the past. My current boat has a 5kw generator so I always use the electric and of course the rail mount bbq.

yes we use ours all the time. we needed to change couple of o-rings and figure out how to work it when we first started
before we got it working i considered changing to propane.
after using it, i'm glad we took the time and effort.

Alcohol is stinky? Don't know what kind of alcohol it is so I can't comment. I thought propane had a rather strong aroma as well?

Am I wrong to assume that an alcohol/electric stove can use either alcohol or electric?

Or does it mean it uses alcohol and electric simultaneously. You know, like a modern house gas stove that uses electicity for the spark but gas once the burner is lit.

propane is a colorless odorless gas. the smell is added to it so that leaks will be noticed as a safety measure.
