Hi, i came across a really cheap 2001 boat with a 4.3 mercruiser..The problem is that its been sitting (winterized & shrink wrapped) for almost 4 years.Has not been started in that time..The motor has under 100 hours on it..Are there any specific signs or things i could look for? After 4 years i wouldnt know what to expect..appreciate any advice

Well if it was in good shape before it should be in good shape now! Gettin it on the water is the only "True test" however you can:

Pull the drain plug on the out drive for a short time and check for water

operate the gear shift and turn the prop, should lock in one dir and be free in the other when in gear, and turn free in neutral

Check the engine oil for signs of water

check the compression on the motor

Hope this helps

If it was winterized properly, there shouldn't be any major issues. I would completely drain all of the old gas, put in some fresh, spray some carb cleaner in it, hook up a good battery and give her a whirl. If she fires then I would say go for it.

If you do get it, I would immediately take it home and change out all the fluids, check the condition of all the hoses and belts, wiring, new plugs, etc. Basically give everything a good inspection/cleaning and replace what needs replacing.

It's not just hours, but years that take their toll on electronics and plastics and hoses, etc...

I wouldn't be afraid of it though...

go by your local mercruiser dealer.
read the tech bulliten for new engine packages unsold and over 3 years old.
follow mercrusiers reccomendations as per that bulliten.
