My engine will pop while it is idling and will idle down or just die. It will do it whether idling or trying to get it to go. It will not go fast at all if it does run, but if you give it to much gas it will pop and die. please help.

Re: Unusual popping from chrysler magnum and will die

Hello Ida and welcome to Iboats. First off we need the model number and size of the motor. ID tag is usually located somewhere below the front of the carburator. Is this a new motor to you or did it run fine last season and start doing it this year?

Sounds like you might have gotten the wires backwards. If it has two spark plugs try reversing the wires and see if the problem goes away.

Re: Unusual popping from chrysler magnum and will die

This engine is a 1983 chrysler 85 magnum. The title reads that the model identification number is 1540. It has ran fine, and it was taken out this year and made a couple of turns in it then it just started spitting back and would die. It has finally gotten to where it will not take any fuel and does not want to even idle. I would think that it was maybe weak fire, but I know of no way to check it other than just seeing if it would fire and it is doing that perfectly. Please help if you can. thanks, LDA

Model number on the title is incorrect. An 85 HP would have a model number like 856B2K or 858B2F. Back fire usually is a timing issue. Is it possible you his something with the motor last time out like a sand bar? Your flywheel key could be broken. You can test each cylinder for spark with a bolt stuck in the plug wire and place it about 1/4 inch from the metal on the motor.

A loud pop? or does it sound like a big wet sneeze?

If it sounds like a sneeze, it is running lean, not enough gas.
Probably an out of adjustment or clogged carburator.
Time to clean and rebuild it.

Re: Unusual popping from chrysler magnum and will die

that is another problem. I took the carb off and it is emaculate. The guy that it was bought from always ran the engine out of gas and took the prop off. He has not had any problems with it in 10 years, but I am going to adjust the screw out to see. I had someone else tell me that the points could possibly be dirty? What do you think?
