Back to the dreaded 92 OMC 3.0 Liter HO with Cobra out Drive. New problem, the engine starts but as soon as the ignition switch is released to the run position the engine dies. Any ideas? Could this be related to the ESA system on this unit. Also I am searching for a factory service manual for this engine out drive package. I know there are after market manuals available, and if I have to I’ll settle for one I will. But I’d rather not.

Disconnect the ESA and try it. That will cure that problem.
It could also be the ignition switch. Put a jumper from the purple wire to the red wire on the ignition switch and see if it runs.
(It's easier there than on the EST style coil)
You may also have a bad dead man switch, or the lanyard isn't installed. Not sure if your start system would bypass the switch during start or not.

Thanks Don, as of yet I do not have a service manual. So can you run through disconnecting the ESA. Any help would be appreciated. Also any Ideas on where I can get a factory service manual? And if I can’t is there a manual you can suggest? Thanks again

There is a 4 pin connector at the ESA, just unplug it. Don't try to run the boat out on the water with it unplugged, or you will have problems shifting and could damage the drive.

If you cnn't find a OEM manual, Seloc would be better than the Clymers.

Thanks Don, I'll run through your list of suggestions this PM, and let ya know what I find. Also am going to order the Seloc today and keep looking for a factory manual.

Re: Up Date On: Engine Starts but will not run

Don,
Turned out to be the dead man switch. The lanyard clip split allowing the switch to partially release and kill the run circuit. When the problem occurred every thing "looked" O.K. with the switch. That coupled with the fact I'm use to the way the Mercruser kill switch functions kind of fooled me. On a side note we figure out the ESA circuit is not working. But I will have to wait for the Seloc manual I ordered before I tackle that one. Thanks again.
