Well.... After all the work I did on the, I could not get them to function properly. So I ended up putting my boat back in the water and just left the engines in the down position. On my port I ended up with something happening and when I toggeled it up or down, I just heard the motor spinning freely. I pulled the shaft cap off and the tilt shaft was not broken. So I gave up. I just wanted to use my boat again.

I put it in at the end of July. I took it out three times. The first two it ran beautifully. The third time, I left my slip and apparently due to the ill kept waters of my old marina, the engine sucked something in the outdrive. Blocked the water flow and blew my Starboard engine. $9000.00 later, with a new engine, I finally put my boat in the water in two days, at a new, better marina. Right on the fish soon as I leave the docks. I just recently found out, the boats at my old marina are blocked in the slips. The hyacinth has the whole slough blocked in.

While the boat was being fixed I decided to have the marine shop fix both tilts. Come to find out, the aftermarket tilt motors, apparently are crap. My new set I installed were crap. The spinning in the port I heard was the shaft in the motor, was after the motor shaft sheered in two.

So my mechanic consulted a couple of "OMC Guys", and the collective opinions was that, do not buy aftermarket tilt motors. Stick with oem. Then he told me the price. I almost said screw the OMC guys. But for $259 a piece I said ok. And guess what...

They work great. No sticking, nothing bad to report. So after all the time I spent on them, and the money. I had given up. My lesson, oem first. Aftermarket only if I cannot find oem.

good news on the tilt, but wow...what's going on in California that a 302 replacement costs $9K? hope it works well for you for many seasons now.

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

The labor alone to remove my engine was a little over 2K. But the heat also took out the intake, heads and exhaust manifolds. My exhaust manifolds cost just over 1k. I had the old style log, with the riser in the back. The shop and I could not track down any. I called all over here, and checked online. So I had to buy the new manifolds and adapter to fit them to my block. They were only able to use the block, re-machine the crank and the carb. Plus the $500 for the tilt motors.

In the space of 2 - 3 mins, my engine went from ok to toast. Thank god for insurance. I am trying to recover my $500 deductible from my old marina right now.

Wow. Sounds like an expensive summer. Glad to hear you're in and running.

The mechanic went with the center risers with an adapter kit. I had the rear riser, but they apparently were not popular enough, and no aftermarket types were made. We looked for them on the web and locally, but no dice.

http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/BPIMANOMCFRDLOG/Manifold,

Zamble, I am getting ready to buy a center riser conversion kit as well and am curious how yours look after installing them and what degree of elbows you have. any chance of snapping a couple of pics?

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

No problem, I plan on going out to my boat on Wednesday or Thursday. I will take a few pics, and post them when I get back. They don't look too bad. I liked the old style, because it was easier to climb in and out of my engine compartment. With the rear riser and all. I will take a pic of both, kinda of a before and after if you will.

@ Boomyal-

I had the log style. The riser was rectangular on the rear top side.

This wasn't available at the time, but all things considered, to buy used off of the internet and not know if they are any good, wasn't an option for me. I would rather of spent my money on the new, than buy questionable off of the internet. Then not have it be in usable condition. Plus I wanted my boat back. Salmon fishing was reopened after 4 years. It is the largest run in quite a while.

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

Thanks alot for posting those pics up Zamble, those look great. That is exactly what I am looking for. I was goign to buy these same ones, but I was worried about the amount of space they would take up under my cowling, but after looking at those pics, the new manifolds dont look any higher or wider than your original log styles. so I will be getting some of these now too.

one question though, it looks like you have 2 different sizes of exhasut hose on those, is that elbow a reducer ?

IIRC the riser on the old log stlyes has a 3.5 inch outlet. Do you know if it is all 3.5" on your new setup or was there some reducing\enlarging involved ?

Thanks again.

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

I believe that the hose connecting the bell housing is the same size, and as you can see the riser to the elbow is smaller. But I am not sure if its a reducer. If you need a different angle, let me know I am HOPING to get a chance to go striper fishing in the next couple of days.

Hope you cand find it cheaper though. I just pray that my port engine last for a while. It was recently rebuilt, but..., you know how that goes....

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

Thanks again Zamble.

one other question, do you know if the old OMC elbows are still on there? like these. or is it just a straight shot from the elbow to the intermediate with hose ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OMC-marine-...773563&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=4701899323833842370

its hard to tell form the pic if those are still on or if they have been removed and it is just hose.

Thanks again

Re: Update on my Stringer tilt systems

Old ones are gone. If you think about it, the length of those pipes would be too long. So it's riser, rubber, elbow, and rubber.
