Thanks for all the imput and advice from my previous post. I Went ahead and had the impeller and a new water pump kit put in my starboard engine on my 2002 280 Sundancer with twin 4.3 EFIs. The mechanic showed me the old impeller and it was in pretty good shape. No missing fins or visible signs of wear. he did say that he thought it was a bit soft but other wise OK. Maybe the GenII Alfa 1 is more forgiving to dry running. The mechanic that did the work told me after the repair that there was some corrosion along one edge of the water pump housing and that this could have caused pump failure if it started leaking.
He ground it out and repaired it with Marine Tec filler. I have no knowledge if this is an acceptable method of repair.Any feedback would be appreciated.
I don't know if this is how other marine mechanics work but the marina where I store my boat fixes things then tells me what they do after the work is done. I guess I have to get on there case to keep me informed of problems while work is underway and advise me of options. This work was billed to four hours plus parts...reasonable?

The GenII impellers (Volume type) are a little more forgiving to dry running, and they last longer than the pressure type.

We don't do extra work until the customer is contacted and gives us an authorization to make the repair. The MarineTex repair should have been something the contacted you on. I'm not sure what part was actually corroded away, and the repair may be fine, but if the repair fails and you overheat and damage the engine, who's problem is it? You may have chosen to replace the housing and fix it properly instead of just patching the problem. He should have at least offered you the choice of the repair or replacement. Then if you choose to try the repair and it fails, it's your fault, not his.
