I am playing it safe and replacing the gimbal bearing and grease seal while I have everything apart. I do have the newer style bearing previously installed that can be rolled out- but need to remove outer race to replace grease seal as well. Any hints or tricks for removing the outer race of the gimbal bearing? How about installing the grease seal and new bearing- I plan on using appropriate sized sockets that are just undersized for both grease and gimbal bearing. This is a Mercr Alpha 260hp I/O.
Thanks for replies in advance!

You need to reinstall the brg so you can use it to pull the cartrige, when installing the new assm. don't pound on anything but the cartrige or you will damage your new brg, merc makes a drive cup to install it--Bob

Re: updated gimbal bearing

according to the manual the bearing goes into the transome with the notches FWD. sometimes if the notches are aft the bearing can **** on the shaft and lock the whole assy up when trying to remove the drive. has happened to me twice but I always follow the manual so it was not on one I had serviced prior. when the bearing locks to the shaft it reqires the engine to be pulled and the gimbal and shaft driven out from the engine side. loads of fun, lots of technician profit :) . no reason to replace the seal
its only for dust. does not "seal" anything. just like the two shaft Orings are not for sealing.page 4A-12 manual #90-12934-2 has a bold faced note about the bearing and carrier being a matched set and not to mix and match.4A-14 has another bold note, ENSURE that the notched edge of bearing carrier faces FORWARD on installation.
sounds like someone installed yours bass ackwards.
