Upgrade stringer drive?

I am kicking around with the idea of upgrading my stringer drive on my 18 foot 2800 lbs boat. It's an IMP Pawnee deep tri-vee-hull and seems to a be a very well built design. Can a newer transom driven out drive be put in place of the stringer drive? I assume this mean I will have to modify the transom. The boat is rated for 245 HP because of the limit on the stringer drive. Could a transom mounted out drive support 300 HP?

Sure, anything is possible with enough cash infusion!!

My Bravo is rated at 300 prop-shaft HP.

You'd have to literally replace the transom though. That might not be worth it....

Rick is right. You are talking about replacing the transom, recutting the hole for the new drive, new transom assembly, possibly new engine (not sure if newer bell housings will bolt up to your older engine, new drive, and other incidentals. Sounds like a heck of a lot of money and time to invest into an old boat. I am sure you can find a boat with the type of drive you want for the same amount of money and less work. I enjoy restoring old boats but not even I would embak on this type of endeavor. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Ayuh,....

It's a Piece of Cake,.....

If the Hull is worth it,.. Go for it...

I've been involved with Several of these refits,...
Mostly Highliner 222s,... Transplanted Alpha 1s into them, with 350s....
Doing an Old Town, Atlantis now,.. Going back with a SBC 383,+ a Bravo 1....

The absolute Best way to pull it off is to go buy a Donor Boat that has the driveline You Want,...
And Gut it,.. Junk it out,....
That way you have All of the little bits,+ pieces that'll nickle,+ dime a refit into Oblivion...
The Atlantis is a piecemeal project,.. Even with Smoke'n Deals on some parts,..
It's going to have a bottomline that I'll probably never even want to total up...

You can even cut out the fiberglass/ gelcoat plug out of the junk hull,+ use it to refill the massive OMC hole...

Good Luck...
