Just bought an old Thompson run about. It has the Mercruiser 5.7 in it. I noticed that the intake was upgraded to the Edelbrock Performance intake. Would upgrading the stock carb be beneficial? If so, any recommendations?

Only if there is a problem with the carb that you have. These engines are not going to benefit from better breathing performance carbs due to the fact that their power band is over by the time you hit 5000.

Ok, I don't see anything wrong with the existing carb. I will clean it and run it.

Ok so keeping it all stock is just as beneficial as upgrading. Thanks!

I have the original Rochester on it. I pulled it last night and cleaned it up really good. Glad I did, two of long mounting boils were loose! Also pulled the fuel pump, which needs to be rebuilt. Looks like it's going to be a tricky re install...

Ayuh,..... How so,..??

If the fuel pump push-rod gets in the way, there's a real short bolt on the front of the block, in-line with the push-rod,....
Remove it, 'n install a longer bolt, push the push-rod Up, hold it there, then screw in the longer bolt til it just touches the push-rod, holdin' it in the Up position,....
Ya might need to bump the motor over abit to bring the flat of the cam 'round to the right point,...
Install the fuel pump, then remove the longer bolt, 'n put the real short bolt back into the hole,....
It oughta be ready to fire it up at that point,....
