So here it is. Wish I had a picture of it. I have this rust colored looking crap all over my white upholstery. Not just a little but a whole lot. It seems to keep growing and if tried every chemical to try to knock it down but nothing works. I've tried shower mold remover, black off, hair spray, awesome, alcohol, Davis marine cleaner, ajax, bleach and more. Does anybody know what I can use to knock this crap down? Sure would appreciate some words of wisdom from somebody appartently smarter then myself. Just call me RUSTY.

Was this issue ever solved? Because I have the same problem. I know this is from quite some time ago. Thanks!

Is it rust stains, or is it some sort of growth?

Either way, try something with oxalic acid in it, such as Barkeeper's Friend (is mildly abrasive, be careful on vinyl).

(Maybe you have already tried something like that, I didn't look up all the things you listed. )

Any chance its actually mold or organic . You could try bleach in a non structural and hidden area. Theres some unique colored mold. My brother in laws well water comes out red from the hot water. Grows in his water at temps about 100 degrees. youd swear it was rust from his pipes.

Could it be actual rust coming from the backside staples or fasteners?

Very true statement if was recovered and stapled with regular staples. You will need to take a smaller piece apart to check this.If the stain is actually growing which means it is an organic stain and is alive, take a facecloth and some regular bleach on it.hold the wet cloth right on the stain for approx 30 seconds.Follow up the area with a flush of warm water.A GOOD FLUSH because the bleach will deteriorate the underside of the vinyl if you dont flush it.If the spot has not shrunk then you know for sure that it is not organic. There are several "rust removers" on the market that may work.Unfortunately a rust stain from a beach chair leaning on my white vinyl seat is the ONLY stain I have never been able to remove on my boat.I used vinyl paint and painted the small section which turned out fine.Charlie
