I'm replacing my seals in the upper gearcase of my alpha one gen 1. It's totally stripped waiting for the new seals to be installed. My question is the lips (WITH THE SPRINGS ON THEM) face opposite from each other as in the upper seal lip faces the top of the upper unit and the bottom seal lip faces down toward the impeller housing correct? What do I use to press them in, sockets? Do I push against the outer diameter of the seal or the area between the outer diameter and the seal lip (hope that makes sense) thanks!

On the standard Alpha1 the upper seal(for the oil) has the spring upward ,

You sure? This isn't a propshaft carrier. You don't use the o-ring anymore either.

I replace my upper oil seal every year when i do the impeller as peace of mind . I take the old one out w/ a screwdriver. To install the one I went to HD, bought a 12 inch piece of threaded rod 3 fender washes and 2 nuts. I sandwiched the washers between the 2 nuts at the very end of the rod, Then, push the seal into place by HAND first, once I can see its seated properly I'll hit it with a mallet. Works like a charm every year. Obviously make sure the rod/nuts are small enough to fit inside the seal without touching. The picture below isn't mine, but its the closest thing I could find on the web to give you a basic idea.I suppose you could use a socket if you're in a pinch.
