I want to replace the upper shift cable on my 165 IL6 Mercruiser.
I am having difficulty removing the controls from the cockpit. It is a single lever control.
Does the handle get removed to reveal a nut underneath?
I don't want to break anything by forcing it........

It's new years day and in the 50's on Long Island.....Boating fever is starting....I removed the cover to play a little today..

Happy New Year to all.........

Hi Tony,

Depending on Which controller you have,
There's usually a set-screw,Up from the bottom or under a cover, that allows removal of the lever.....
Then you'll find a snap-ring or another set-screw or a twist-lock arrangement that will release whatever fa'cade or trim-ring you've got....
Then you'll probably find 3 screws holding the controler to whatever panel it's mounted too..........

Make Any Sense ??????????

It's going to depend on what control you have Tony. Different neutral safety switchs on different controls, got a picture you could post of your controller?

Re: Upper shift cable replacement

Usually the numbers on the switch are the manufactures numbers, and there is no way of cross referencing them to a Merc number.
If you have picture of the controller, email them to me at rainyday@kpunet.net then put Free Bee Tony in the subject line so I know who it's from.
I will post it here for you in case someone has other options for you.

Just a note.........

It's a single lever side mount unit. There is a button on the center of the lever that, if pushed in, allows you only to operate the throttle. It's on a '78 Grady White.

The new merc number is 36004A 4 but it shows it's NLA, the old number is 36004A 1. You might check with a local Merc dealer and see if they have it in stock, but no way can they order it for you.

Dougrussle.com shows they have the -1 number.
http://dougrussell.com/partscatalog/components/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewparts&colid=09&coldesc=MERCRUISER%20SEC%20B%20REMOTE%20CONTROLS%20PARTS%20MANUAL&index=2182&block=70&BlockNu mberList=300,90,160,170,10,260,70,60,40,180,220,20,310,250,200,50,290,210,270,230,30,80,240,190,280,100,110,140,150,120,130

hi freebeetony, you sure ask a lot of questions that i have too. you must have the same engine and throttle control i got. the throttle control(w//o takeing it apart) dons posted looks just like mine too. mine may need some work too. my lever is loose, lateraly, and i got to over shift comeing out of F, back into R a little bit to get N. thanks for the pic too dons. pretty pricey swtich, least it looks like ya get a couple of bucks in wire and the proper connector. but not the tabs, gots to pay extra it looks like for thems. wonder if it's really a marine duty switch. for that price it must be. B.O.A.T.......
