Uprated carb for penta AQ205?

Hello all, I've got an AQ205 which is running pretty sweet now after a top end rebuild. I'm thinking I'll maybe stick in a 4-barrel carb to bump up the horsepower a bit. What's a good model to install? Does anyone know of one going second hand?

Thanks in advance!

You do realize that is also going to require a new intake manifold, along with a new carb and linkage don't you. Plus you need the proper manifold for whatever type carb you decide on. Adapter plates are usless, might as well stick with your 2bbl carb as use an adapter plate.
Don't go looking for used carbs either. They are usually junk and seldom worth the money you pay for them.
Lots of people use the Edlebrock 1409 marine carb. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-1409/?rtype=10

I believe the AQ205 was originally equipped with a 4 barrel, qjet carb. what do you have on there now?

Thanks for the responses!

Thinking about it - it does actually have a 4 barrel already. Does this mean that an eddy carb will fit onto the current manifold, but will only give marginal performance gains, if any? It confuses me as I understood the AQ205 to have 190HP, but saw an ad for a 4.6L penta which said standard HP is 190, and 225 could be achieved with a 4-barrel carb. Is the current carb restrictive, or am I getting everything this engine's realistically going to give? I was hoping for a few hundred I could bump the power up 30HP without too much grief...

You can very briefly see the current inlet manifold 40 seconds into this cheesy video:

Is that your video? I love to see the rebuild going on in the livingroom.:D

The hp ratings seem to vary a bit. In order to get anymore power you'd have to look into vortec heads, which require a lot of new parts for another 20+ hp.

Swapping to a 1409 carb won't help.

My comments was assuming you had a 2bbl carb like you said you did.
Like captmello said, if you already have a 4 bbl, you won't gain anything by swapping carbs.

thanks for the responses - I'll stick with it as it is then! I understand a few HP can be gained from converting to a fresh water cooling system as you can pop in a thermostat that runs the engine a bit hotter, but I'll give that a miss until next season.

captmello - yes that's us doing a rebuild in the living room :) interesting rebuild with a bizzare gouge right on the flash ring. Suprising the gasket hadn't blown a long time before!

I am interested in learning something about the Edelbrock 1409 Carb that Don mentioned many are using. Is it a bolt on replacement for a Holley 2 barrel (model 2300) such as I have on my 3.0L? Does it use the same manifold and linkages?
