URGENT fuel lead additive

[65holiday]

kind of urgent, I have a 1965 mercruiser chevy in-line 4 cylinder, should I be using a lead additive in the gas? Thanks dudes!

Howdy,


Just use regular gasoline.

My 66 Mark Twain (150 Mercruiser) ran on unleaded gasoline for only 39 years. with no problems.

I ran 93 octane unleaded on lake erie last week... it ran beautifully, this won't hurt it will it?

Higher octane than required won't hurt a thing(except your wallet!)

not an expert in this area, however i believe the only thing different from a leaded motor to a unleaded motor is in the valves and seats, if the heads have been redone anytime after leaded gas went away, I'm sure they would have updated that! I'm sure others will have some input on this too!

That is generally true......but seems over-rated..... My 39 year old 150 mercruiser had neither "hard" valves or seats and all it got was unleaded for many years.

I was going to run it until it died and then do the head......It never died....

mercrusier has a tech bulliten out on what engine require a lead additive and which dont. I dont have a copy of it here but I imagine DonS does.

my '75 want premium + lead too...

i give it premium unleaded + a lead additive... could be wasting my money. but that's what i do.

on tech issues< nope DonS most likly wont answer, neither will I.
however if you PM him asking to look at your post and if he has that bulliten will he please post it.
gotta remember that bulliten is dirt old.
still valid but dirt old.
I dont think unleaded fuels only for road use was mandatory until about 1989.
