Hey guys,

I?m going to look at a motor in a few hours as a parts motor for my 67? Chrysler 45 horse with a melted piston. This new motor has a good power head and runs great, but the lower gear drive is junk.

Anyhow, the new motor is a 50hp Chrysler, but except for a more aerodynamic cover, appears to be exactly the same. He claims it is a 67 also, but I?m not so sure as it looks different, and I know that at some point, the 55s became 50s due to a new rating at the prop. I realize ignition systems, fuel pump, etc are different. But will the power head exchange between the two? Unfortunately he can?t look up the model number until tonight when I would be arriving anyway, so I have to do a WAG as to what it is.

Here is his motor:

Here is an example of mine (not my exact motor):

Any help is appreciated, I need to decide if I should drive an hour soon or not. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks,
Eric

I don't know the answer, but someone that does will come along. However, I have at home the Chrysler Service Manual for 45 & 50hp but I don't remember what years. If no one has answered by late this afternoon, I'll dig it up and have a look at it to see if that helps you any. I would think quite a few parts would swap if they're close in age.

This is what a 67 cover looks like. That is NOT a 67 cover. That is a 64 cover right after Chrysler bought West Bend and simply rebadged the existing design. Later, Chrysler changed the covers to a much better looking design. 35, 45, and 55 were all the same size and cover. Same basic block with a different bore and stroke. The basic engine will swap onto your leg, however, wiring may be different. I seem to remember those West Bend engines as having a terminal block on the lower cowl instead of the engine block. At any rate, you should still be able to swap your lower unit onto the earlier engine. Knowing it is NOT a 67, pay less.

Frank has right, that is an earlier engine then yours. But it is a 1966 not 64. In 1964-65 Chrysler bought out West Bend and the 65 year model was badage Chrysler/West Bend. In 66 it was only Chrysler. The block will swap and as Frank says the terminal is on the lower cover and if it is a battery ign. the coils are mounted back near the plugs.

Frank... Are you sure yours is a 67? I think it is a 69.
Here in Europe the 55 was intruduced in 68 and the #55 on the hood was red. In 69 and 70 the # on all hoods were blue. But the decal with "Chrysler" became (the chrome typ) larger on 20Hp and up in 1970.

But it can have been differens between US and export models.

Nordin: No, I am not sure. It was so many years ago-- BUT-- Let's see, I graduated in 1968 and then bought the engine, controls, and one steel gas tank as a year end left-over for $600 US. So, It could be a late model 68 or if my memory is not accurate it could be a 69. Things back that far are a bit fuzzy. I know I had put it initially on an old 13 foot MFG and then transferred to a 1969 Glastron V145 (I think) that I bought new. It was a piece of work with rolled upholstery and a racing stripe on the deck, Grab handles in the rear, and I outfitted it with custom canvas. I towed it with my 68 Plymouth Satellite. Unfortunately it was a tri-hull and rode very rough in almost anything except glass smooth water. So, I traded it in 1971 for my current Glastron V153. Hmmm! Maybe it was the massive doses of Mary Jane that addled my brain. LOL

Re: Urgent Help with parts interchange 45-50hp; buying parts motor in a couple hours.

Frank...... I have to correct my self a bit. The 50Hp was out in 1967, 66 was the 50Hps last year.
The 55Hp was intruduced in 67 but the numbers on the hood were red. In 69 they became blue and 1970 blue with the Chrysler label in lager chrome plate style.
SO If your 55Hp has the right hood it is a 1969 year model.
The 50Hp had the same bore and stroke as the 55Hp. 3 3/16x2,8 in. 44,7 cu in. (733cc).

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all the help. The engine ended up swapping great. The only issues I ran into were the coils not fitting underneath the cover (easy fix), and I’m having throttle issues. I had to switch to the throttle assembly that came with the replacement engine, as apparently the pivot points for the cables on the motor are different on the 64 verse my old 67, and the 67 throttle assembly would either push the carb too far open and past, or it would not idle. I’m still having issues getting the lower unit to go into both reverse and forward on the same swing of the throttle, but that’s another time and place…

I will try and post some pictures up when I have time.
