Urgent life or death boat help needed!

Hi folks, I have a boat related question, and I wonder if you can help.

I am planning a world record setting solo-swim from Los Angeles to Hawaii this winter and am in need of help. My buddy has agreed to follow me as a chase boat and I am concerned that his boat may not be of adequate size for this voyage. He has a fairly old 14ft aluminum boat that he has used exclusivly on lakes in Northern California. He assures me that it is solid and up to the task with only minor "seepage" from the rivets. He is planning on rigging up an electric bilge pump and a makeshift sleeping deck. In addition he has assured me that the barrels of fuel and coolers water, food & liqour that he will have attached to the side of the boat will be enough consumables to last the voyage. In case of emergency he will be towing a small sevlor inflatable raft. Costs are an issue so I don't have a large enough budget to buy a larger deep sea vessel in the 16 to 18 ft range that I had originally planned on. My question is do you feel that my friends 14ft is enough boat to safely make this trip?

Thank you for your help and well wishes.

Hi mamaru, welcome to iboats!!!

After reading your post, the first thing that's comes to mind is......... are you freaking joking?

A leaking 14fter for a open ocean trek is suicide.

Ya gunna need a bigger boat  and a suitably trained crew (plural).

Aldo

Take plenty of video tape - you'd be a contender for America's Funniest Videos!

Re: Urgent life or death boat help needed!

Thank you all for your warm support. When I reach Honolulu and am surely mobbed by media and paparazzi I will give a shout out to this Forum.

Anyways I have talked to my buddy Carlos and he now has agreed that his old 14ft'er may be to small. However his cousin Pedro is willing to donate a well used 22 ft bayliner. Compared to Carlos 14ft'er the bayliner looks like the Titanic, the only problem I can see is some minor cracking around the transom and alot of mould and fungus from sitting under a large tree.

Allthough Pedro guarantees that the inboard only knocks when it's cold & that it will make it from L.A. to Honolulu, Carlos isn't convinced. He wants to swap in a nitrous oxide injected 440 cubic inch Dodge motor that he found in an old drag car behind a used car lot.

So my next question is, is a 22 ft bayliner good for an ocean crossing, and will a 440 dodge on nitrous make a good engine for putting along slowy next to me as I swim to Hawaii.

Thank you all

I think with the nitro you'd be better off skiing behind the boat...make better time, and you would still be setting a record! :D

Re: Urgent life or death boat help needed!

Carlos wants the nitrous on board in case we encounter rough seas. He figures if the waves get too big he will just hit the switch and hightail it out of harms way.
As for the sharks we have modified a length of asbestos lined sewer pipe to act like a cannon & shoot out raw meat 25 feet behind the boat to dupe the sharks and keep them away from me. And if one gets too close Carlos will blast it with his "grey market" Tec-9

On a sidenote does anyone know what the Coast Guard charges for call-outs? Not that I expect to call on them.

Mamaru
I say go for it buddy. Not only will you set a new world record swim but you receive a Darwin award too after your lost at sea, die from dehydration, drown, get eaten by a shark.
LOL Mamaru that’s a good one.
:D

Hmm 14 foot open boat over a 1000 miles of swimming and 1 guy to help you. Don't think so! But Swim real close to the Farallon Islands so we don't have to hear from you after the first few days. :)

If the hull leaks, just drill a couple of holes in the bottom so the water has a place to drain out.
